How to Start a Blog – 8 Tips and Tricks

Are you ready to start a blog? Are you freaking out about where to begin and how to start? I definitely did when I first started (and still am!). There are so many things to do and to start working on. Doing these 8 tips will help you not only increase your blog traffic, but improve the quality of your blog as well!

I began with WordPress Personal Plan and eventually kept upgrading to the Business plan. I absolutely love WordPress  and will be sticking with it for some time. It’s a very user friendly program and it is easy enough that you don’t need to know much about the technical stuff in order to blog!

I have 8 tips you should do when starting a blog. If you have already started a blog, you can still use these tips! I definitely used some of them months down the line and wish I knew them when I first started. It’s never too late to start though!

1. Get a Domain Name

If you are sure what you would like your domain name to be, go ahead and get it. I’m glad that I got mine in the very beginning.With all of the WordPress plans, you are able to create your own domain name or to use your own from an outside source.

While you are at this, see if the Instagram/Twitter/etc handles are available as well. Having these reserved will help you create a better profile. You don’t want to start marketing yourself as a name that someone already has.

2. Find Your Niche

Readers will want to visit your site for a specific reason. Maybe you write about being a mom, or being a student in college. Find a niche and see if you are able to write blog posts about it. Try to aim for slightly specific. If it is too specific it may be hard creating new content a year down the line, such as freshman life could be college life for a wider range of content.

3. Join Facebook Groups

I didn’t do this until my 6th month of blogging and I wish I joined some earlier! My favorite is Boss Girl Bloggers and Creative Ninjas. It’s a big community of other bloggers who have the same questions I have. It can be hard to ask a random friend how to buy a domain, but ask a huge group of bloggers? You’ll get an answer real quick.

Many of these Facebook groups have posts where you check out other’s work and they check out yours. This is a great way to increase your reach and create some new friends!

4. Create a Pinterest account

85% of all my blog traffic comes directly from Pinterest, so I would say it’s pretty important to me. This high traffic source is similar for many other bloggers as well. This isn’t a surprise though, 200 million people use Pinterest a month. I started focusing on my Pinterest account at the start of this year and have seen an huge increase of traffic since then. 5. Have Content Ready to Go

Having 5-10 blog posts ready to go when you start a blog or before you promote it will help your reading stay on your website longer. I only had one blog post when I started, so when people were done reading it, they left my website all together because there was nothing else to read. This would also allow you to deep link to other articles on your website and lower your bounce rate.

6. Create a Content Schedule

If you’ve read any of my other blogging blog posts, then you’ll know I’m a huge advocate for content schedules. They are a way to hold yourself responsible for getting content out each week. Even if you only have time to write one post a week, it’ll help you get focused and remember to write one. I post 2-3 times a week on specific days and anything more is a bonus!

I also use a content schedule to plan out my Instagrams, Facebook posts and other social media. Bullet journals are my favorite way to plan out all my posts for everything!

This is also helpful for those expecting a new blog post from you. If you publish a post every Tuesday, then they may come to your site on Tuesday! I try to be consistent with when I post so my readers will know when to expect new content!

7. Expand Your Knowledge

If I never expanded my knowledge on blogging, then my blog would not be where it is now. I have taken so many courses (all free!) to help me learn about this blogging world. There are certain rules such as photo copyright and affiliate marketing tactics. Take advantage of every learning opportunity you know.

This also goes for any tools you use to help your blog. I’ve learned a ton about Lightroom, Tailwind and my Canon camera to help me create better content. Tailwind is a Pinterest (and now Instagram) scheduler. It posts your pins at the most optimal time and you are able to join tribes! Tailwind lets you schedule your pins in advance and I use it to post all my Pins from my blog for the week. 8. Focus on Readers, not Numbers

This can be easier said than done, but it is so important! If you take anything away from these tips, remember this one. Forget about the numbers and how many people are reading your blog and focus on who is reading your blog! Being so oriented around the numbers can cause you to lose focus on what is important! If you are passionate with your blog, the numbers will naturally grow.

Engage with those already reading your blog. I am still trying to grow my blog and have a larger reach and the biggest thing that has helped my blog is engaging with those who are interested in it. I’ve gained a few blogger friends and I love my little community! Who cares if you don’t have a million people reading your blog? Enjoy the little things and let time take care of the rest.

I didn’t earn a penny for the first 8 months. It took me 8 whole months before my first dollar and you know what? I was so excited when I saw I actually earned a penny! Just remember the real reason you are blogging-to share what you are passionate about!
