What if My Partner Isn’t Vegan?

Hi I’m Camille and I fell in love with a meat eater.

When I first went vegan, my dream was to marry a vegan guy and have vegan babies. Then I met the love of my life and he didn’t share my same passion for a plant based diet.

Sure it wasn’t that hard when we first started dating, especially because we were long distance. We would just pick restaurants that we could both eat at. As time went on, it became increasingly difficult to eat out together as I soon grew sick of eating $15 salads.

Today, I am sharing five ways to help the both of you find some common ground. This list of five ways to help ease the dietary boundaries isn’t just for significant others, it can be for friends and family too!

*For all intensive purposes I am using “he” in relation to my boyfriend. Substitute whoever is the meat eater in your life!

1. Don’t push it.

Realize that he may not go vegan. The worst thing you can do is try pushing something to do something they don’t want to do. Think about how you would react if they wanted you to eat meat. The more you push them to become vegan, the more they may not want to.  Instead, try sharing why you eat this way and let him ask questions.

At first, I tried pushing my boyfriend Zach into becoming a vegan. Didn’t get me anywhere and just led to disagreements. He grew up in a place where being a vegan was weird and unusual. It wasn’t as unusual where I grew up. Over time I accepted his dietary habits and he accepted mine.

One way that we are able compromise on his eating habits was buying organic and local meats/dairy products. He still gets those products while I feel a tad bit better about buying them.

2. Make Vegan Base Meals

I now live with my boyfriend, so coming up with meals for the both of us can be tricky. I am typically the one who cooks and I’m not too keen on whipping up a huge steak for him.

However, one thing that works for the both of us is that I’ll cook the base of the meal. I’ll make a vegetable stir fry and if he would like some chicken in it, then he is welcome to come cook the chicken. Often times, he just eats it without meat!

This happens all the time with our dinners. It helps me too, so I am able to cook just one meal and not spend too much time in the kitchen.

3. Look at menus

It’s no fun sitting at a restaurant and realizing you cannot eat a single thing there. Same goes for your significant other. Zach doesn’t exactly want to eat a coconut “bacon” sandwich.

Look at menus of restaurants before you even leave your house. Make sure you are able to eat there before you sit down. Our favorite restaurant has both vegan and meat options, so we typically go there if we are eating out.

Another thing I do is just google “vegan at ____”. You can oftentimes find articles about vegan options everywhere. I was even able to eat at Denny’s- I wouldn’t have guessed I could eat there if I hadn’t googled it.

Look at the sides as well. Sometimes I’ll end up getting 3-4 sides and making a dinner out of it. Such as rice with different vegetables.

4. Respect Each Other’s Eating Habits

Being in a relationship can be hard enough at times, and food isn’t something anyone wants to argue about. Respecting one another’s eating habits is a way to reduce those arguments.

Just because Zach brings home a huge steak, doesn’t mean I will love him any less or will throw the steak out. Our relationship is much more important than the type of food that we eat. Focus on the bigger picture.

This is a great area to set some rules on what you are willing to do. He knows not to use the same utensil when cooking our pasta and his meat so I am able to still eat the pasta. I’m willing to cook him eggs in the morning as well.

This will be different for every couple. You may not be fine cooking any kind of non-plant based food or you may be fine doing so. Perhaps you want different pots and pans too. Talk to one another and see what you can do to help each other.

5. Expand their knowledge

While Zach may never go vegan, he is eating a more healthy diet. Expanding someone’s knowledge on healthy behaviors can only lead to a positive outcome. Watch some health conscious documentaries together-you may learn something new too!

I think this tip is the best way to encourage anyone to eat better. When they have all the facts, they are able to make a conscious decision on how they should eat. If you say “you have to go vegan,” you aren’t making any kind of educated argument.
I hope these five survival tips help! Remember that you fell in love with the person as a whole, not their eating habits!

My 10 New Year’s Resolutions

Hello 2018. You are welcomed with open arms and motivated spirits.

We are now a little over a week into 2018 and I am feeling great about this new year. I’ve already accomplished quite a bit during this first week. Even though 2018 is off to a good start-doesn’t mean it will stay that way.

Hence, creating my new year’s resolutions.

I’m not typically the type of person to create new resolutions each year. I thought this year I will give it a go and see what happens.

This year I am going to be in the same place for the whole year. The last couple years I was moving, transferring schools, doing this or that. This is my year to stay put and work on my goals. Goals that I can obtain if I work hard enough.

10 New Year Resolutions

1. Develop my Faith

This year I really want to take the time to attend church, attend bible studies, and work with my faith on my own as well. I have already started on this goal by reserving Sundays just for the Lord. I will not be working on Sundays, I have rearranged my work schedule so I am able to go to church. I wanted to give myself every opportunity I had to attend church and develop my faith.

2. Drink more water

This goal doesn’t just apply to drinking more water, but to put effort into bettering my health. Being vegan doesn’t always been being super healthy. I am going to take this year to really develop my knowledge on eating a plant based diet-the healthy way.

I now also have no excuses because my apartment just opened up the gym that is actually closer than my mailbox!

3. Work Harder

By the time December of 2017 rolled around I was getting lazy. Not just with my schoolwork, but with my life as well. I was tired from the year and just wanted a solid break. I spent this past year moving across the country and preparing to move.

This year I want that new year motivation to stick with me throughout the whole year. I want to work harder at making my blog/Youtube/Etsy etc better. I want to really put the work in so I can see the results I want.

4. Be Consistent

Something I am really excited to do is regularly upload to all my social media. I often find myself making lists and thinking of ideas that I want to do-but not doing them. (See #3). I want to spend this year putting out something every single week. Ideally it would be one blog post, one video and one instagram post every week. My smaller goal is to do at least one of those a week.

5. Focus on school 

Like I had said before, I will be in Maine for all of this year. School can become tough when you are planning to move, or in the process of moving.

I am grateful to be in one spot this year. I would like to see my gpa higher and take the time to really learn the material. Especially if I’m paying out of state fees to go, I better learn something!

I used to volunteer a lot when I was in high school. I want to be able to give my time to those in need. I’m not quite sure about what I’d like to do yet, but volunteering is one this I will be doing this year.

7. Start working on my big career goal

If you didn’t know, my big career goal is to become a dentist. There are a lot of steps in doing so and lots of hard work to put into it. This goal also plays along with #3 and #5. I wanted a specific goal for this one.

I want to spend the time studying for the dental exam for dental school. Really looking into what dental schools require and where I would want to go.

8. Work on my book

When I was 18, my senior project was to create a product. I had just celebrated my one year vegan anniversary so I wanted to do something that involved being vegan. I created a 175 page book all about having a happy and healthy vegan lifestyle. Unfortunately I chose a company that charged a lot per page, so they book ended up being $65. This year I would love to use a different program so I am able to sell the book at a more reasonable price.

9. Expand my knowledge

I’ve mentioned having a Youtube account and an Etsy shop. I own a Canon rebel camera that I barely understand how to use. I want to learn how to manually use my camera-not just on auto feature.  I want to learn more about Etsy and how I can market myself. Learning more about what I enjoy doing will make it easier for me to do it. I just recently learned how to put an overlay in my YouTube video and I was pumped to see that it had worked.

10. Be Happy

As cliche as this sounds, I want to make a conscious effort into becoming a more happy person. I usually lean on the side of positivity, but sometimes I can just be real negative. I think that goals 1-9 will also help me achieve this one.

3 Ways to Wear Black Pants

I don’t know about you guys, but I tend to have a hard time wearing black pants. For some reason I prefer blue jeans so when I do want to wear black pants, it can be difficult finding something to wear with them. I decided to style my black pants three different ways. I’ve broken it down into casual, dressy, and date night. Those are typically my three types of looks I go for in my week. I have absolutely no idea where my pants are from. They are from Ross about 3 years ago and the brand is YMI.  They are on sale for $29.50! They are so comfortable and stretchy. 

*Most of what I am wearing is from what I’ve already had in my wardrobe. This means the store most likely doesn’t sell it anymore so I will link similar products to everything!*

Casual:

Okay, let me tell you a secret. I absolutely love the thermal tees from Old Navy. They are the most comfortable shirt ever and you can wear them to bed too! I’m often wearing them out and about and then right to sleep! They come in a million different colors as well. They are on sale right now for $8.00! These combat/moto boots are from Target a year or so ago. I found them for $10! They don’t sell them anymore so I will link a similar pair below.

Welcome to Fall

Fall is upon us. I am writing this on November 2nd of 2017 and this morning it was 32 degrees out. Cold awakening to Fall. Here in Maine, the weather has been very slowly going down. I’ve officially broken out my winter clothing and started layering my clothing up!

I have also started to get some fall decor. Now that I have my apartment and I will be here to stay for quite some time, I thought it would be a good idea to “invest” in some fall decor that will last me throughout upcoming years and even through the rest the year as permanent decor.

I bought most of these pieces in early October, so I’ve had some time to enjoy all my decor. I decided that I didn’t want to go all Halloween’d out this year. I stuck will a more Autumnal theme that will last until Thanksgiving. Almost everything I got is from Target. I will link as many things as I can, or similar ones!

I got these flowers from Trader Joe’s about two weeks ago! They are still alive and just now starting to die. The adorable vase is from Target. It comes in three sizes and I have the medium one. This will be something that will be out all year. The Fall plaque is from Target as well and was in their dollar section for $3.00! I love the smell of cinnamon and Trader Joe’s has mini broomsticks-I thought they only have the large ones (which I own two of as well).

Can I just say that I love Target? This adorable leaf placemat was only $2.00! The pumpkin container is where we keep all of our tiny coffee table trinkets-usually ends up being storage for headphones! It’s a cute way to store little bits and bobs. The smaller pumpkin is from Trader Joe’s and the candle is from Home Goods. It smells amazing.

I love pumpkins if you haven’t noticed. Target sells a bunch of yarn-wrapped ones for about 6-9 dollars. They are super cute and a fun way to mix up the typical orange pumpkin color.

This is our little candy bowl for this Halloween. I love love love the Justin’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups. I’ve refilled this bowl a couple of times already! They are a great little treat to grab out the door as well.

This is another knitted pumpkin from Target and some gords from Trader Joe’s. I love how they are uniquely shaped and help add some texture to our living room bookshelves. Check out my elephant! I love elephants and I had to get this the second I saw it.

I thought a small white pumpkin was a simple touch to this bookshelf with all of the darker colors. I arrange our books by color and the white helps break up all of the darkness.

This is probably my favorite pumpkin. I got it from Home Goods and it’s such a fun color. In real life it’s not as bright but a bit more muted tone of yellow.

I’ve had these pillows from Target for about a year now. Because they are from last year, they are online only. Get the fox one, plaid one, or the chevron one here. They had matched my room decor in my previous apartment and they work amazing or this Fall season. The yellow blanket is so soft and a great pop of color.

Okay, I know this isn’t fall decor, but OMG I love this scent from Mrs. Meyer’s. I am a huge fan of this brand and the second I heard they released this limited edition scent of Apple Cider I drove to target and picked up everything in it. My favorite is probably the surface cleaner. I love cleaning the counter tops now that I have this. The scent isn’t too strong, but strong enough where you can still smell it after it’s used. Get the surface cleaner, dish soap, hand soap  or the candle here. UPDATE*** All of these are sold out online and in stores. I kept the links in case you want to stay updated!

That’s all for my fall decor. I’m sure I’ll continue to get more as the season passes, but I’m very happy with how my apartment looks (and smells)! I love Fall and can’t wait to start decorating for the holiday season!

10 Facts You Probably Didn’t Know About Me

I thought for my 10th blog post I would share 10 facts that you (probably) don’t know about me. Let me know 10 things about you!

  1. I have moved about 13 times. I went to three different high schools (one was twice!) in three different states.
  2. I hate hot coffee. I will only drink it if there is a ton of coffee and milk in it. Same with iced coffee as well, but I will drink that everyday. My order is a grande vanilla latte with almond milk and I add cinnamon and vanilla powder.
  3. I was born in California. I haven’t lived there for much of my life, so I consider Maryland to be my home base.
  4. My guilty pleasure is the Kite Hill Cream Cheese in the Chive flavor. I literally put it on anything I can. It’s the best (vegan) cream cheese I’ve ever tried. I highly highly recommend it!
  5. My favorite treat is the San Diego Little Italy Farmer’s Market coconut pancakes. I only get them maybe once/twice a year but I have never tasted anything more amazing in my life.
  6. I have three tattoos. An elephant, a cross  (both on my ankles) and a bible verse (inner arm) in my mom’s handwriting. 
  7. My favorite non-domesticated animal is the elephant. I just love them so much. I love everything about them and is the reason why I have one as a tattoo!
  8. My ultimate travel destination is Australia/New Zealand. I love their accents and would want to do a road trip seeing all the awesome places there.
  9. I am obsessed with Utah. I have never been there and don’t really know anything about the state but for some reason I want to go. Every time I see a cool picture or a store, it is always in Utah. I would love to go someday in the next couple years. I even have a Utah Pinterest board!
  10. I wrote a book about how to become a healthy vegan and have a vegan lifestyle for a capstone senior year project in high school. It’s my most prized possession and I am extremely proud of it. Eventually I’d love to put a revised edition into an ebook/book that I can sell!

Moving!

Finally in Maine!

Hey guys! I have arrived in Maine.

It was such a hassle to get there, but I am finally here and all moved in. I completely forgot how difficult/expensive it is to move into a new apartment with basically nothing but 400 pounds of clothes. Target has become my new home away from home. I think I’m at 5 trips so far and I’ve been here for 9 days…

Today I thought I would show you a couple of sneak peaks around the apartment. The apartment isn’t done yet and I want to wait to show you the whole tour of it.

So far our room (me and the BF) is just about completed and the kitchen is all done. We still need to finish the living/dining area and Zach’s office. Other than that, I am super excited with how it turned out. The apartment was brand new when we moved in which is so incredible. I forgot how amazing a dishwasher is. I didn’t have one at my last apartment and now I love doing the dishes -something I didn’t really think I’d ever say! Which I’m sure will get old after a while.

I’ve just completed my orientation at my new job and school begins in a couple of weeks so I’ve been spending my days cleaning and getting the place organized. I am so excited to become busy though. It’s been almost two months since I’ve worked/been in school so it’ll be great to start having things to do again.

My favorite thing in the kitchen is the (above) jars on our kitchen counter. I’ve filled it with flour, rice, oats and sugar. Just some of my most used things. It was only $20!

I got matching lamps/Threshold cubes from Target for either side of the bed. I love these lamps because they have an outlet on the side of it and I love how the base is indented so I can place my jewelry at the end of the night in it.

Sorry about the horrible lighting for the bathroom, but I love the “plate” in the corner. It’s a great way to make all my face products look a bit more put together. Both the toothbrush holder and plate are from Target. I believe they have a white version as well.

This is right by the front door. I wanted a place to place our keys when we first walked in. I love plants and all the plants in these pictures are low light, easy maintenance ones. Hopefully they stay alive! Since we don’t have any bookcases yet, most of our books are on this cube system. Eventually I’d love to put more decorative decor inside of it. I plan on painting the terra cotta pots white.

Two Smoothie Bowls!

Ah the smoothie bowl. A great alternative to the regular smoothie. Something I really like about putting the smoothie in a bowl is the toppings! It’s a really easy way to get even more health benefits depending on what you put on top. My favorites are fruits, nuts and seeds.

I use a NutriBullet for all of my blending. It works great for what I need it for. The NutriBullet can sometimes have a hard time blending these smoothie bowls if I don’t put enough liquid. In the recipes below, you’ll see that I have a range for the liquid. Use what your blender requires!

Spirulina Smoothie Bowl


This bowl might as well be called power smoothie bowl. Everything in it will give your body so many good nutrients and vitamins. Here are just a few examples:

Spirulina has so many health benefits. You only need it in small doses, it packs a powerful kick. It can help modulate the immune system, be a great source of protein, help boost iron levels and help alleviate allergies. Hemp seeds are a great source of essential fatty acids and contains all 20 amino acids, including the 9 our body cannot produce by itself. Chia seeds have a high amount of nutrients such as fiber, protein, calcium and magnesium in a small caloric amount.

You will need:

Smoothie:

  • 1-2 tsp spirulina powder
  • 1/3 cup frozen blueberries
  • 2-3 frozen bananas
  • 1/4-1/2 cup almond milk

Toppings:

To Do:

  1. In a blender, blend the frozen bananas and almond milk until an ice cream consistency. Add 1/4 cup almond milk at first, if the blender isn’t blending, then add a tablespoon at a time. You want the consistency to be thick. If you add too much almond milk, it can get liquid-y quick!
  2. Add the spirulina and blueberries and blend until its roughly a uniform color.
  3. Place smoothie mixture in a bowl and add toppings!

Mango Smoothie Bowl


I love this bowl so much. I love how its a perfect mixture of creamy and crunchy.

The pumpkin seeds provide Vitamin B while the goji berries help promote healthy skin and has high antioxidant properties.

You will need:

Smoothie:

  • 1 cup frozen mango
  • 2-3 frozen bananas
  • 1/4-1/2 cup almond milk

Toppings:

To do:

  1. In a blender, blend the bananas with as little almond milk as you can until it has a smooth consistency.
  2. Add mangos and mix until well blended.
  3. Place in bowl and add toppings!

Two Vegan Green Smoothies!

Eating a vegan diet doesn’t necessarily mean that you are getting in all the nutrients and vitamins you need on a daily/weekly basis. Smoothies (whichever color they may end up!) are a great way to pack a ton of nutrients into your body.
